WASHINGTON - Catholic raced to its 15th consecutive victory by defeating Marymount 86-67 in a CAC contest, as all five CUA starters finished in double figures.
Sophomore William Morley (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) and junior Craig Avallone (Lincroft, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) led Catholic with 15 points apiece while juniors Kevin Wise (Newtown, Pa./Notre Dame [N.J.]), Matt Hilleary (Manassas, Va./Seton School) and freshman Bobby Henning (Bricktown, N.J./East Brunswick) each scored 10 points respectively. Sophomore Blair Mills (Hebron, Md./Wicomico) also notched double digits, netting 11 points. The Saints' Carlton Phelps was one of four Marymount players to score in double figures as he tallied a game-high 18 points.
Catholic, ranked No.1 by Basketball America and No. 3 by D3hoops.com, never trailed in the contest as the Cardinals (15-1, 6-0) jumped to an early 7-2 lead. Marymount would answer by rallying to get with in one point at 17-16 midway through the half but Catholic would keep applying pressure.
Devin Archie would hit the back end of two free throws put Marymount within one point at 23-22 for the last time in the game. Catholic would then get on a 9-2 run to end the half at 32-25.
Early in the second half, Morley would find Wise on an excellent look to the basket getting the bucket and the foul. Wise hit the accompanying free throw to give CUA a 10-point cushion at 37-27. Catholic would eventually raise its lead throughout the half and at one point lead by as much as 21 points.
The Cardinal defense held Marymount's leading scorer Dallas Crawley to just a modest 13 points. Catholic took advantage of the Saints' 18 turnovers and Hilleary kept Marymount's inside game in check registering a career-high seven blocks.
For the game CUA was 34-for-73 (46.6%), 19-for-35 (54.3%) in the second half. Marymount (11-6, 4-2) shot 23-for-52 (37.1%) from the floor and were just 4-for-18 from beyond the arc. Catholic hit a season-low two 3-pointers but held an important 43-38 rebound advantage.
Catholic returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 23, as they host St. Mary's in a CAC game at the DuFour Center with a tipoff at 8 p.m.
