WASHINGTON - Junior forward Matt Hilleary (Manassas, Va./Seton School) scored 26 points to lead four Cardinals in double figures as Catholic rolled past St. Mary's (Md.) 85-65 in a CAC Tournament quarterfinal game at the Raymond A. DuFour Center.
Hilleary added a team-high 16 rebounds for his 12th double-double of the season, while junior guard Kevin Wise added 16 points, sophomore forward William Morley (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) 14 and junior guard Craig Avallone 11 to lead the balanced attack.
After a Brandon Jones 3-pointer cut the Cardinal lead to 32-28 with 4:33 left in the first half, Catholic went on a 14-2 run to take a 16-point lead, 46-30, shortly before halftime. St. Mary's never got closer than nine points the rest of the way.
Jones led the Seahawks with 22 points on 7-for-22 shooting, while Matt Miller came off the bench to add 12 points in 14 minutes. Jeffrey Turner tied for the game high with 16 rebounds. St. Mary's shot 23-for-64 from the floor (35.9%) and 10-for-29 (34.5%) from behind the arc.
Catholic held a 54-40 advantage on the boards and shot 22-for-25 from the foul line.
It was the 200th career victory in 276 games for Catholic University head coach Mike Lonergan, the winningest basketball coach in school history.
Catholic, the top seed in the tournament, improves to 23-2 and will face No. 4 seed Goucher in the CAC semifinals Thursday night. The Gophers (13-12) advanced by beating Mary Washington 66-65. St. Mary's season ends at 5-21.
