Jan. 23, 2002

WASHINGTON - Catholic rolled to its 16th consecutive victory, downing St. Mary's 88-62 in a CAC contest Wednesday night at the DuFour Center. Junior Kevin Wise (Newtown, Pa./Notre Dame) led the charge with a game-high 21 points on 7-for-9 shooting and 3-for-5 from beyond the 3-point arc. Catholic's big men of junior Matt Hilleary (Manassas, Va./Seton School) and sophomore William Morley (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) each collected a double-double. Hilleary, with 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Morley, who tallied 14 points and 12 rebounds, helped Catholic hold a decisive 60-45 rebound advantage. Hilleary also added five blocks and five assists.

St. Mary's (2-14, 0-7 CAC) held tough for the first ten minutes and held a three-point lead midway through the half, but Catholic came roaring back. After Brandon Jones' 3-pointer, Morley hit a driving layup and then sunk a 3-pointer to give CUA a two-point lead at 20-18. The Seahawks' Rob Kearney tied it at 20-20 with his tough leaner in the paint. Kearney finished with a team-high 17
points. Catholic then exploded to go on a 28-2 run to open up the lead. The Seahawks' shooting went cold in that stretch shooting 1-for-12 and 9-for-37 overall in the first half. Catholic went into the locker room up 48-25.

The second half was similar to the first for St. Mary's as the Seahawks had some serious shooting woes. After going 1-for-11 from beyond the arc in the first half, SMC was just 1-for-10 in the second 20 minutes and 24-for-79 from the floor for the game. The Cardinals connected on 31 of 69 from the floor.

Catholic (16-1, 7-0 CAC) would raise its lead to as many as 32 points in the win.

The Cardinals resume action on Saturday, Jan. 26, with a conference game at Goucher starting at 8 p.m.
