WASHINGTON - Catholic University sprinted out to a 41-16 halftime lead and coasted the rest of the way as the No. 8 Cardinals defeated Swarthmore 88-53 in the first round of the Pepsi Classic at the Raymond A. DuFour Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Cardinals won their ninth consecutive game behind balanced scoring from junior guard Craig Avallone and junior center Matt Hilleary (Seton School/Manassas, Va.), who scored 12 points apiece, and junior guard Kevin Wise, who added 10 points on 4-for-6 shooting. Nobody played more than 23 minutes for Catholic, which shot 34-for-64 from the floor and turned the ball over just nine times. Freshman point guard Bobby Henning had nine assists for the third consecutive game, four of them in a 23-4 first-half run that set the tone for the game.

Swarthmore (3-6) was led by sophomore forward Chris Loeffler, who scored 18 points in 16 minutes on 8-for-14 shooting from the floor. Freshman forward Matthew Gustafson (South Lakes/Herndon, Va.) added 11 points.
