WASHINGTON--- Catholic had five players score in double figures as the Cardinals defeated Villa Julie 108-68 in non-conference action Monday night at the DuFour Center. Senior Matt Hilleary (Manassas, Va./Seton School) scored 18 points to lead CUA to its fourth straight win.
Freshman Shane Sowden (Wilmington, De./St. Elizabeth) chipped in 12 points, nine rebounds and two blocks.
Catholic (4-0) jumped out early, racing out to an 18-3 lead capped off by a rare three-pointer from Hilleary at the 17:00 mark. From there, the Mustangs scored the next seven points to claw within eight points but the Cardinals were just too tough, going on a 20-6 run to break the game open.
The Cardinals led 60-36 at the break and looked to increase their lead in the second half as hot shooting propelled the way. CUA was 20-of-34 in the second frame, going 43-of-78 for the game including 10-of-25 from beyond the arc.
The Mustangs shot 26-of-68 from the floor.
Villa Julie (0-4) was led by Wade Henniger's double-double (17 points/10 rebounds).
CUA leads the all-time series, 5-0 over the Mustangs.
Catholic returns to action on Wednesday as they host Salisbury University in a Capital Athletic Conference tilt, starting at 8 p.m.
