FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - No. 4 Catholic outlasted No. 25 Mary Washington, 62-58, Wednesday night to clinch the regular season CAC title for the sixth time under head coach Mike Lonergan.

Despite scoring a season-low 62 points, Matt Hilleary was one of three Cardinals in double figures with a game-high 18 points. Craig Avallone chipped in 10 points while William Morley added 11. Hilleary and Morley led the Cardinals with six boards apiece.

A 7-0 run by the Cardinals opened up a tight 16-13 lead capped off by sophomore Will Jawando's tough basket underneath.

Catholic (20-1, 11-0 CAC) had its biggest lead of the half courtesy of Matt Tanner's jumper from the left baseline to make it 31-19. Dupras' trey with just eight seconds in the stanza cut the CUA lead to 33-25 at the break.

Evan Fowler's three-pointer capped an 8-0 run to tie the game at 47-47 with just over six minutes to play. The Eagles (17-4, 7-3 CAC) took their first lead of the game as Fowler's jumper from the free-throw line gave Mary Washington a 54-53 lead with 3:40 in the game. Fowler led the Eagles with 15 points.

Hilleary followed on the next possession with his basket and after an offensive foul on Fowler, Kevin Wise connected from long-range, on his only trey of the night to give CUA a four-point lead.

The Eagles would get as close as 60-58 with 15 seconds but clutch fee-throw shooting by Avallone helped the Cardinals to their ninth straight win.

At 11-0 in the conference, the Cardinals hold a 3.5 game lead and hold the tie breaker over the second-place Eagles, thus clinching the ninth overall and seventh outright regular season title and top seed in the upcoming CAC Tournament.

Catholic returns to action on Saturday, February 15th with a CAC game with St. Mary's at the DuFour Center at 4 p.m.
