Catholic 78, Mary Washington 60
Jan 15, 2003
WASHINGTON - Seventh-ranked Catholic used Craig Avallone's career-high 21 points to down No. 21 Mary Washington, 78-60, in a Capital Athletic Conference game at the DuFour Center. The senior was 8-of-11 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line.
Junior Will Morley added 20 points as Catholic (12-2, 3-0 CAC) never trailed in the contest.
The Cardinals scored the first eight points of the game and looked to increase their lead but the Eagles managed to keep it close. Two Evan Fowler free throws tied the game at 17-17.
From there Catholic used a 12-0 run to restore the double-digit lead. CUA went into the lockeroom up 10 at 43-33.
Cris Hairston's layup was able to cut the lead to seven at 58-51 midway through the half, but that would be as close as the Eagles could get.
Catholic was just too strong down the stretch as Morley's driving layup with just under five minutes fell in drawing a foul, sending the DuFour Faithful to their feet and seemingly ice the game. Catholic took advantage of an aggressive Eagle defense that resulted in the Cardinals going 26-of-28 from the free-throw line.
Morley was 5-of-9 and a perfect 9-of-9 from the free-throw line to help CUA defeat the Eagles for the 11 straight time.
Hairston led Mary Washington (11-2, 2-1 CAC) with 11 points and seven rebounds. Teammate Dan Dupras added 10 points and six rebounds before fouling out late in the game.
The Cardinals resume action on Saturday, January 18 as they play at Marymount in CAC action at 4 p.m.
