ST. MARYS CITY, MD - All American Matt Hilleary recorded his second consecutive double-double to lead Catholic past St. Mary's, 78-64, in a Capital Athletic Conference game for their third straight victory. The senior scored a team-high 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. The center also blocked four shots and added a steal.
Senior Craig Avallone (11 points), junior William Morley (17 points), and sophomore Will Jawando (15 points) also scored in double figures for Catholic (14-2, 5-0 CAC).
Jonathan Neely scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Seahawks (4-10, 1-4 CAC) which kept close tabs on the Cardinals in the first half trailing 35-27 at the break.
Avallone would help CUA pull away in the second frame as the senior netted all of his 11 points including back-to-back three-pointers midway through the half that opened up a 56-44 lead.
St. Mary's could only pull within 58-51 with 8:29 to play before Avallone sunk his third three-pointer of the evening with just over five minutes in the game to restore a 13-point lead.
Morley added six rebounds and four assists as the junior has scored in double figures in 13 straight games while Jawando was one rebound short of a double-double grabbing a career-best nine boards in his first start of the year.
The Cardinals resume action this Saturday, January 25th with a home date with Goucher in a CAC tilt at 4 p.m.
