Jason Banzhaf (Livingston, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) earned his fourth Landmark Conference men's basketball Player of the Week award this week after shooting 70 percent from the field and 66.7 percent from three-point range.

Landmark Announces Winter All-Academic Team
The Landmark Conference has announced that 32 student-athletes have been honored with selection to the 2007-08 Winter Landmark All-Academic Team. Two male and two female athletes from each of the eight Landmark institutions were selected for the team which honors athletes who have excelled athletically and academically.

Banzhaf Earns Landmark Rookie of the Year
The Catholic University of America freshman Jason Banzhaf (Livingston, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) has been named the 2007-08 Landmark Conference mens basketball Rookie of the Year and second team all-conference the league announced Wednesday. The forward was also one of just two freshmen named all-conference with 10 of the 12 spots going to seniors. He is the first CUA athlete to earn one of the top individual awards.

The Catholic University men's basketball team looked to have control of the second half Saturday afternoon against the Drew University Rangers (6-14, 3-6 Landmark Conference). Unfortunately a late comeback from Drew was too much and CUA's final three point attempt hit the front of the rim to give CUA the 66-64 loss. With the loss the Cardinals fall to 2-7 in the Landmark Conference and 8-12 on the season.

The Catholic University mens basketball squad got its revenge on the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (9-10, 4-4 Landmark Conference) Friday evening. After CUA fell in overtime in the teams' first conference meeting the Cards came back with a 70-41 victory to improve to 8-11 on the season and 2-6 in conference play. Freshman Jason Banzhaf (Livingston, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) was the story of the night for the Cardinals scoring 22 points going 10-10 from the line and bringing in a team-high 12 boards.

The Catholic University mens basketball team (7-7, 1-2 Landmark Conference) lost a wild one Saturday afternoon at the DuFour Center to the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (5-7, 2-1 Landmark). A layup from freshman Chris McGrew (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch) sent it into overtime. The extra period proved to be a shootout as the teams went 4-5 from beyond the arc but in the end turnovers were the killer in CUAs 70-65 loss.

The Cards will face Salve Regina in the semifinals on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. The winners of both semifinal games will advance to the championship on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. with the consolation scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

This marks the first honor for Parker as well as the first player of the week selection for Catholic University this basketball season.

The Catholic University men's basketball team (5-5) defeated the Villa Julie Mustangs (2-7) Sunday night in its final game of 2007. CUA faced the Mustangs at Towson University in a neutral meeting of the two teams. The Cards led from the opening minutes and carried the comfortable lead to the end getting the 75-60 victory.

The Catholic University men's basketball squad lost a 19-point second half lead to fall 92-88 to the Piedmont Lions (4-1) in the opening round of the Roger Taylor Invitational Friday evening. CUA controlled the game until midway through the second when the Lions mounted a 16-2 run to take the lead with 6:01 remaining. With the loss the Cards drop to 3-3 on the season.

The Catholic University men's basketball squad (1-1) split its two games at the Oki Data Tip Off Classic this past weekend hosted by Widener University. The Cards defeated the Delaware Valley Aggies (0-1) on Friday 64-60 but fell to the host Pioneers 72-62 on Saturday. A pair of freshmen led the squad in scoring over the weekend showing off the Cards' talented large recruiting class.

Hoops and harmony: How PeacePlayers is changing the Middle East
Former Catholic University men's basketball guard Sean Tuohey is the founder and director of PeacePlayers, formerly known as Playing for Peace. Tuohey received his B.A. from CUA in 1999 after playing for the Cardinals for three seasons. He scored 1,072 career points and is currently ranked 30th among all-time scorers.

Olivero and Robinson Named CUA Athletes of the Year
Nick Olivero (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson ) and Kate Robinson (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin) have been voted the Catholic University Student-Athletes of the Year for the 2006-07 school year, capping off two strong semesters for Cardinal athletics. This years honorees are both two-sport athletes who excelled on their respective teams despite their underclassman status. The award is voted on by the coaches and is given out to a non-senior male and female each year.

Catholic University head coach Steve Howes announced Tuesday that Justin Kamm has joined the Cardinal mens basketball staff as an assistant coach for the 2007-08 season. Kamm comes to CUA from the University of Miami where he served as a graduate assistant coach with the Hurricanes.

The awards are given out annually to a male and female who has had an outstanding four-year career at CUA.

Six Cardinals Earn University Honors
Last Thursday evening The Catholic University of America held its Student Leadership Recognition Celebration. Among the 27 undergraduate awards given out, seven were honored with six receiving individual recognition. Kelli McErlean, a member of the track and field squad, was one of the masters of ceremonies and also received one of the twelve Student Activities Awards for her work with campus ministry.

Catholic Universitys Scott Fumai (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) and Stephen Wheeler (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel) have both been named to the D3hoops.com Mid-Atlantic all-region third team. The honor caps off a successful season for the Cardinal duo who led CUA to a record of 23-6, a Capital Athletic Conference title and berth in the NCAA D-III Tournament.

Woodson) and Stephen Wheeler (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel) each scored 18 points but neither effort was enough to get the victory for the Catholic University mens basketball squad Saturday night at the DuFour Center. With the 81-70 loss to the Lincoln University of Pennsylvania Lions (20-8) CUA was eliminated from the NCAA tournament and finished the season 23-6.

The Catholic University Cardinals (23-5) defeated the Messiah College Falcons (19-7) 58-37 friday night in the first round of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at CUAs DuFour Center in Washington, D.C. Three Cards Earn All-CAC Honors
The Catholic University of America has had three mens basketball players earn 2006-07 All-Capital Athletic Conference honors. Senior Scott Fumai (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) was named to the first team while classmates Patrick Dwyer (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) and Stephen Wheeler (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel) were both named to the second team. This is the second honor for Dwyer and the first all-conference award for both Fumai and Wheeler.

Catholic University to Host NCAA Mens Basketball First and Second Rounds
For the second year in row, the Catholic University of America mens basketball team has won the Capital Athletic Conference giving them an automatic bid in to the NCAA Tournament. Additionally, the Cardinals have been selected to host a four-team regional this Friday and Saturday for the opening rounds of the tourney at the DuFour Center.

Second Half Surge Gives CUA the CAC Championship
Catholic University (22-5) scored 51 points in the second half to come back and beat the Hood Blazers, 85-75, (21-7) Saturday evening in the Capital Athletic Conference championship game at Gov. Thomas Johnson High School. CUA overcame a seven-point halftime deficit to beat the top-seeded Blazers and receive the leagues automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. The win also marked CUAs seventh conference championship, giving them the most in the league, as well as the third time they have won it back to back seasons.

CUA Pulls Out 69-67 Victory in CAC Semifinal
It took a team effort but the Catholic University mens basketball squad (21-5) managed to come away with the 69-67 victory over the Mary Washington Eagles (16-10) Thursday evening at the DuFour Center. With the win CUA has advanced to the Capital Athletic Conference championship game on Saturday versus Hood.

Cardinals Trounce Sea Gulls in First Round of CAC
Senior Scott Fumai (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) peaked at just the right time for the Catholic University Cardinals (20-5) Tuesday evening at the DuFour Center. The senior had 26 points and 14 rebounds in the Cards first game of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament against Salisbury (12-14). With the win the Cards now advance to CAC semi finals and also continue their streak of ten 20 plus win seasons.

Cardinals Best Eagles on Senior Day
The Catholic University mens basketball game on Saturday was a must-win for both teams involved. The winner would get the number two seed in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament while the loser would be the fourth seed at best with the possibility of dropping lower. After forty hard-fought minutes the Cardinals (19-5, 11-5 CAC) came away with the 74-61 win and the number two seed while the Mary Washington Eagles (15-9, 9-7 CAC) dropped to the number six position.

Ex-Falcons lighting it up for Catholic
As four-year members of the Good Counsel High boys basketball program, county residents Scott Fumai and Stephen Wheeler spent the bulk of their playing days in the shadows of their more recognized teammates, but in their final campaign at Catholic University, Fumai and Wheeler are the brightest lights shining on a season that could end with a trip to the NCAA Division III tournament.

Cardinals Too Much for Bison
The Catholic University mens basketball squad (18-5, 10-5 Capital Athletic Conference) avenged an earlier loss Wednesday evening with the 70-52 victory over the Gallaudet Bison (4-20, 1-14 CAC). Earlier this year the Bison came away from the DuFour Center with their first conference victory but the Cardinals didnt let history repeat itself with the convincing win.

Cards Get By Sea Gulls 74-72
Catholic University mens basketball battled the Salisbury (12-11, 7-7 CAC) Saturday afternoon at the DuFour Center and come out with the 74-72 win which keeps them in the hunt for some of the top spots in the Capital Athletic Conference. The win improves the squad to 17-5 for the season and 9-5 in the CAC which ties them for third.

York Edges CUA 67-63
The Catholic University mens basketball squad (16-5, 8-5 Capital Athletic Conference) was able to hold the York Spartans (15-8, 9-5 CAC) scoreless for over nine minutes in the second half. Unfortunately it wasnt enough to get the victory as CUA fell 67-63 Thursday night at the Grumbacher Center. The loss mixes up the conference standings as the Cards fall back to third place but each team at the top is separated by a game or less.

Scott Fumai scored 19 points, including the 1,000th of his career, and Stephen Wheeler added 18 to lead Catholic University to a 69-62 victory over Hood College at Thomas Johnson High School on Saturday.

CUA Wins in 67-64 OT Thriller
The Catholic University mens basketball team (15-4, 7-4 CAC) knew it was in for a battle Wednesday evening at the DuFour Center against the Marymount Saints (10-9, 5-6 CAC). The last time the two squads met, CUA eked out the victory despite an incredibly rough game that saw three technicals and an ejection. On Wednesday, CUA was in a different boat with a nine-point lead at the halftime looking to be in control. The Saints came back and forced overtime but the Cards were able to come away with the 67-64 win.

Dwyer Scores 1,000th in Cardinal Victory
After losing a tough 68-62 game to Goucher (6-12, 3-7 Capital Athletic Conference) back in December, the Catholic University mens basketball team (14-4, 6-4 CAC) was looking to prove something Saturday night in Maryland. Senior Patrick Dwyer (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) had a little extra ammunition as the forward was just eight points away from reaching 1,000 in his career. After forty minutes of play both Dwyer and the Cardinals made the statement they intended to with an 80-49 win.

Wheeler Leads CUA over St. Marys
Stephen Wheeler (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel) had a standout performance Thursday night against the St. Marys Seahawks (9-8, 4-5 Capital Athletic Conference) to get The Catholic University of America mens basketball (13-4, 5-4 CAC) squad the 75-73 victory. The game was a momentum change for the Cards who broke their two-game losing streak and moved ahead of the Seahawks in conference as both teams had been tied for third.

The Catholic University mens basketball team dropped the first of a three-game road trip with a 64-56 loss to the Mary Washington Eagles (12-4, 6-2 CAC). The loss was the second in a row for the Cards who now fall to 12-4 overall, 4-4 in the Capital Athletic Conference.

Gallaudet Stuns Cardinals
The Catholic University mens basketball squad (12-3, 4-3 CAC) had a rough day against the Gallaudet Bison (3-12, 1-6 CAC). With their two leading scorers struggling from the field CUA was unable to find an answer for a scrappy Bison squad looking for its first win in the Capital Athletic Conference. Despite a close game and numerous chances, CUA couldnt come up with the victory falling 55-51 and ending its six-game win streak.

Cards Rise Above Sea Gulls in 62-58 Victory
Wednesday evenings Catholic University mens basketball game was a battle between two of the top scorers in the Capital Athletic Conference. In the 62-58 Cardinal victory senior Scott Fumai (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel), the fourth ranked scorer in the league, went up against Salisburys (9-6, 4-2 CAC) Ray Williams who currently sits in the number one position. Although Williams slightly edged Fumai in scoring, the Cardinals came out on top improving to 12-2 overall and 4-2 in the CAC.

The Catholic University mens basketball team continued to use its tough man to man defense and efficiency in the paint to roll over the York College Spartans (9-4, 3-3 CAC) Saturday afternoon at the DuFour Center. Cards Defeat Bluejays, Win CUA Classic
The Catholic University mens basketball team (10-2) won its fourth straight Sunday afternoon at the DuFour Center. The Cardinals 61-42 victory over the Elizabethtown Bluejays (6-6) gave CUA its 12th Classic championship and second is the last two years. Patrick Dwyer (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) was named the tournament MVP after leading the Cards in the championship game and Stephen Wheeler (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel) was also named to the All-Tournament squad after two outstanding performances.

Cardinals Upend Monarchs in CUA Classic
With Catholic Universitys two leading scorers having an off day, the mens basketball team (9-2) was looking for someone else to step in. In the Cardinals 72-43 victory over the Methodist Monarchs (4-5), that person was Stephen Wheeler (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel). The senior center scored a game and career-high 25 points and added eight rebounds. Wheeler was all over the court Saturday afternoon at the DuFour Center converting two three-point plays and throwing down a monstrous dunk off of a fast break in the second half to ignite the crowd.

Steven Papageorges acrobatic shot with no time remaining bounced around the rim before going in to give the Catholic University mens basketball team (8-2) the 78-76 win over the Susquehanna Crusaders (7-4) Wednesday evening at the DuFour Center. CUA came back from a 19-point deficit to get the victory over its future Landmark Conference opponent.

Catholic University mens basketball (7-2) used a total team effort in its 77-67 win over the Villa Julie Mustangs (4-4) Monday evening at the DuFour Center. Four players scored in double digits and the Cards forced 15 Villa Julie turnovers to improve to 7-2 going into a two-week break for the holidays.

Blazers Shoot Down Cards 79-73
The Catholic University of America mens basketball team (6-2, 2-2 CAC) fell to the sharpshooting Hood Blazers (7-2, 3-1 CAC) for its second Capital Athletic Conference loss of the season. The Blazers shot 49 percent for the game including a 51.7 percent effort in the second half to get the 79-73 victory. Scott Fumai Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) had a big first half for the Cards with 25 points but was limited to just two in the second.

Crazy can be the only word to describe Catholic Universitys mens basketball (6-1, 2-1 CAC) game Wednesday evening against the Marymount Saints (3-3, 1-2 CAC). After losing at the half, CUA came back to get the 68-55 victory despite an incredibly rough game that saw one ejection, three technicals, one intentional and 45 personal fouls.

Gophers Hand Cards First Loss of the Season
Turnovers were the story of the game for the Catholic University mens basketball team (5-1-1 CAC) Saturday afternoon at the DuFour Center. The Cardinals blew an 18-point lead by committing 27 turnovers in their 68-62 loss to the Goucher Gophers. Goucher on the other hand had more 19 steals and just 16 turnovers to give CUA its first loss on the season.

The Catholic University mens basketball team (5-0, 1-0 CAC) battled back from a halftime deficit to get its first win in conference play and stay undefeated for the season Wednesday night at the DuFour Center. CUA beat the St. Marys (Md.) Seahawks (1-3, 0-1 CAC) 67-62 on the first day of Capital Athletic Conference play. Steve Papageorge (Annandale, Va./Falls Church) hit a three-pointer with 12 seconds left to give the Cards the lead and the eventual victory.

Catholic University mens basketball (2-0) beat the Albright Lions (1-1) Saturday night in the host Lions Wyndham Tip Off Tournament. The 67-62 victory gave CUA the tournament title and improved the squad to 2-0 for the season.

After a slow start the Catholic University mens basketball squad (1-0) forced the ball into the paint and eventually beat the Neumann Knights (0-1) 85-73 at the Wyndham Tip Off Tournament hosted by Albright. With the win the Cards advance to the championship game on Saturday.

Catholic University will look to make it 10 consecutive 20-win seasons and postseason appearances in 2006-07. The Cardinals return two fulltime starters and one sometime starter to a team that finished 21-7 last year, won the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) championship and advanced to the NCAA playoffs for the eighth time in the past nine years.

Three Assistants Join CUA Program
After their highly successful 2005-06 season, the CUA mens basketball team looks to aim higher and higher. Helping them do so will be a new trio of assistant coaches. Brett Davis, Theo Gremminger, and Damon Pigrom will be pacing the sidelines this season along with head coach Steve Howes.
