Men's Basketball Wins Albright Tournament
Fumai named tournament MVP
READING, Pa.- Catholic University men's basketball (2-0) beat the Albright Lions (1-1) Saturday night in the host Lions' Wyndham Tip Off Tournament. The 67-62 victory gave CUA the tournament title and improved the squad to 2-0 for the season. Forward Scott Fumai (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) was named the tournament MVP after scoring over twenty points in both games. Pat Dwyer (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) and Mike Wasilenko (Washington Township, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) both earned all-tournament team honors.
Once again the Cards started out slowly allowing Albright to lead for the entire first half. At two points in the first, the Lions were up by as much as 11 points but CUA was able to cut it to three before going into the locker room.
Cold shooting was a major factor in the poor first half as the Cards shot just 24 percent from the field. CUA did, however, continue to play tough defense and rebound well going into the break with a 24-22 advantage on the boards.
In the second half, the Lions kept the Cards at a distance at one points building their lead to ten. But CUA kept plugging away and with three minutes left, a three by Fumai gave the Cards the lead for good. CUA was able to hold on as it was sent to the line to get the victory.
Fumai and Dwyer each had better performances in the second half scoring 15 and 6 respectively. Wasilenko contributed 11 points as well as two assists in the crucial half.
Fumai ended with 21 points and Dwyer added 13 with a team-high six rebounds. Wasilenko also had 13 points going 2-3 from three point land. Albert Medoro led the Lions with 15.
CUA will travel to Haverford on Tuesday evening for a game before the Thanksgiving holiday.
