CUA Outlasts Fords 61-55
Dwyer notches a double-double
HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Catholic University men's basketball team (3-0) had a scare against the Haverford Fords (0-3) Tuesday night in Pennsylvania but came away with the 61-55 win. CAC Player of the Week Scott Fumai (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) led the team with 19 points including some big free throws and three pointers.
CUA started strong with an 11-0 run fueled by long-range shooting from Fumai and Jeff Sparrow (Reading, Pa./Daniel Boone). The Cards were up by as much as 18 in the first but the lead dwindled as the minutes ticked off giving the Cards just a nine point deficit going into the break.
With the Cardinals up by 11, the Fords evened the score to start the second half staging a 10-4 run of their own and coming within four. The Cardinals were able to disrupt the momentum by working the ball into the paint and making layups but with the scoring getting close it seemed to be a brand new ball game.
For the remainder of the half, the Cards were able to hold off any Ford advances keeping the deficit in the high single digits.
With six minutes to go Matthew Palmer hit a long three to ignite the crowd and bring the Fords within five. The Cardinals floundered missing two shots as well as getting a traveling call giving Haverford the ball back to connect on a layup making the score 48-45. Fumai finally hit a pair of free throws to end the 7-0, four minute run.
Another turnover gave the Fords the ball under the basket and Palmer spotted up at the same spot to swish another big three making it 50-48. As the Cardinals missed layups and the Fords looked to be taking over, Fumai was again the calming force hitting a three from the left side with two minutes to play.
Fumai connected on another pair of free throws with just over a minute left making the score 56-50 but again Haverford battled back laying in a shot on the other end. Forced to foul, Haverford sent numerous Cardinals to the line and CUA connected on almost all but was unable to stop the Fords from scoring to keep it close. The Cardinals escaped with the 61-55 victory.
Fumai led the Cardinals with 19 points. Pat Dwyer (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) had an inconspicuous double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Mike Wasilenko (Washington Township, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) rounded out the scoring with 11 points. Ray Brown led all scorers with 20. Both teams shot 37 percent for the game but CUA had 19 turnovers to the Fords' 14.
The Cards will take a small break before traveling to Scranton on Saturday to play their future Landmark Conference opponent at 4:00 p.m.
