CUA Falls to Mary Washington

1/23/2007

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Catholic University men's basketball team dropped the first of a three-game road trip with a 64-56 loss to the Mary Washington Eagles (12-4, 6-2 CAC).  The loss was the second in a row for the Cards who now fall to 12-4 overall, 4-4 in the Capital Athletic Conference.

The Cardinals started out strong going back and forth before taking the lead entering the break.  The first half saw one tie and five lead changes before CUA went up at 8:50 on a jumper by Scott Fumai.  The senior score six points in the closing minutes to give the Cardinals the 26-22 lead.

Fumai led the Cards in the first with eight points while Mike Wasilenko (Washington Township, N.J./Don Bosco Prepand Patrick Dwyer (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) each added five.  CUA tied the Eagles in rebounding with 21 and committed just five turnovers to UMW's nine.  Both squads shot in the low 30's.

The second half began with CUA holding onto the lead until 16:00 when the Eagles began a 7-0 run that gave them the lead and eventual win.  From that point on the Cards were never able to make it back and even though the Eagle lead only went into double digits once CUA was sunk.  With less than two minutes to play Catholic University was looking at a three-point deficit.  However, the Cardinals were forced to foul for possession and when they were sent to the line on offense CUA was unable to connect for the second game in a row.  At the final horn the score was 64-56 in favor of the Eagles.

Nick Olivero (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) had a big second half with 11 points for a team-high 13 for the game.  Wasilenko was the second leading scorer with 12.  The Cardinals were outrebounded 37-33 but committed just 13 turnovers to UMW's 15.  Justin Baker was the leading scorer for the Eagles with 16 points.  Once again CUA had a tough day at the line shooting just 42 percent.

The Cards will continue on the road with a game at St. Mary's on Thursday.
