Cards Go 1-1 at Oki Data Tip Off
Stolzenthaler and Banzhaf named all-tournament
CHESTER, Pa.- The Catholic University men's basketball squad (1-1) split its two games at the Oki Data Tip Off Classic this past weekend hosted by Widener University. The Cards defeated the Delaware Valley Aggies (0-1) on Friday 64-60 but fell to the host Pioneers 72-62 on Saturday. A pair of freshmen led the squad in scoring over the weekend showing off the Cards' talented large recruiting class. Sean Stolzenthaler (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) and Jason Banzhaf (Livingston, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) were both named to the all-tournament squad.
On Friday the Cardinals were led by the freshman Banzhaf who scored 17 points and posted a game-high seven rebounds. CUA held a slight 33-27 lead at the break and despite being outscored in the second, managed to pull out the 64-60 victory to advance to the championship game versus Widener. Nick Olivero (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) added 15 points and rookie Wes Parker (Germantown, Md./Northwest) had 10. CUA shot 41 percent for the game and outrebounded the Aggies 34-22.
In Saturday's championship, the Cardinals kept it close but couldn't move ahead falling 72-62. Freshman Brian Baker (Colts Neck, N.J./Colts Neck) was the top scorer for CUA with 10 points and Banzhaf contributed eight points as well as 13 rebounds down low. The Cards were outshot 48 to 41 percent but outrebounded the Pioneers 39-29.
CUA will host Haverford on Tuesday in its home opener at the DuFour Center.
