Greyhounds Race Past Cards 67-63
Parker has 15 in the contest
BETHLEHAM, Pa. - The Catholic University men's basketball team was edged by the Moravian College Greyhounds (11-4, 2-2 Landmark Conference) Friday evening in the first game of a Landmark Conference doubleheader weekend. The Cards fell 67-63 and with the loss drop to 7-8 on the season and 1-3 in the Landmark Conference.
The Cards led just once as R.J. Dixon (Charlotte, N.C./Cannon School) opened the game with a layup. From the point on the Greyhounds took the lead and never relinquished it. The Cardinals kept it close in the first half never allowing the deficit to become more than nine but CUA still couldn't overtake Moravian. With less than two minutes left, Wes Parker (Germantown, Md./Northwest) hit a three to cut it to four but that would be as close as they would get with the Cards going into the break down 35-29.
Parker led the Cardinals with nine points and three rebounds. The Cards shot 41 percent from the field while Moravian shot 55 percent and 50 percent from beyond the arc. CUA outrebounded the Greyhounds 16-13 but had three more turnovers. The teams combined for just five free throws taken in the first half and the Cards were 3-3.
The second half didn't start much better for CUA but once again the team didn't let the game get away. Down by eight with 14 minutes left, The Cards staged a 10-2 run to knot it at 48 with ten minutes remaining. Unfortunately the Greyhounds answered with a 10-0 run to take the lead and the game as the Cardinals were never able to recover. Nick Olivero (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) hit a three with 33 seconds remaining as CUA trailed by just two but being forced to foul the Greyhounds took advantage hitting two to seal the 67-63 win.
Parker led the way with 15 points for the Cardinals as well as six rebounds. Sophomore Danny Quinn (Annapolis, Md./Archbishop Spalding) had 10 points and five rebounds while Jason Banzhaf (Livingston, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) contributed a team-high nine rebounds. The Cards shot 41 percent for the game and the Greyhounds were 49 percent from the field. CUA was outrebounded 37-31 but had two fewer turnovers. Chris Earley was the top scorer for Moravian with 18 points.
The Cardinals will play at Scranton tomorrow afternoon in their second contest of the weekend.
