Susquehanna Holds Off Cards in Landmark
CUA will host Juniata on Sunday
WASHINGTON - The Catholic University men's basketball squad (7-10, 1-5 Landmark Conference) had a tough task Saturday evening as they tried to beat the Susquehanna University Crusaders (9-7, 6-0 Landmark Conference) and hand them their first loss of conference play. Although CUA kept it close in the first half they were unable to get the victory falling 70-57.
Susquehanna jumped out to an early lead but a layup at 12:11 by junior Sean Stolzenthaler (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) put CUA right back in the game leading by one. The remainder of the half was a battle as neither squad could take over and get a substantial lead. Susquehanna's Kevin Cuff sank a shot in the closing second to give the Crusaders a 34-31 advantage at the break.
Both teams shot well in the first half with SU hitting 51 percent from the field and CUA making 48 percent of their shots. Freshman Jason Banzhaf (Livingston, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) led the Cardinals with nine points as well as a team-high seven rebounds. CUA dominated the paint outrebounding the Crusaders 20-14 but committed four more turnovers. Cuff led Susquehanna with 11 in the half.
The Cardinals came out with a full court press in the second half and despite giving Susquehanna some trouble getting the ball up, it didn't stop their 58 percent shooting. CUA tried to keep it close but Su took advantage of turnovers and missed shots getting ahead by as much as 10 five minutes into the half. Brian Baker (Colts Neck, N.J./Colts Neck) got the Cards back within six with a three-pointer at 9:10 but that would be as close as the Cards would get as an 8-0 run was too much to overcome. At the final buzzer CUA fell 70-57.
Banzhaf led the Cards with 15 points and nine rebounds, while Baker added ten points in the game. Sophomore Danny Quinn (Annapolis, Md./Archbishop Spalding) had five points and contributed eight rebounds for CUA. The Cards couldn't stop SU's 54 percent from the field and couldn't match it shooting 40 percent for the game. CUA did, however, hold a 34-30 advantage in rebounds. Cuff led all scorers with 28 for Susquehanna.
The Cards will be back in action tomorrow at the DuFour Center in another Landmark Conference match-up. CUA will face Juniata College at 4:00 p.m.
