Cardinals Fly High with Win Over
Three Cards in double figures for the game
WASHINGTON - The Catholic University men's basketball squad got back on the winning track finishing out their home schedule with a 85-79 victory over the Moravian College Greyhounds (18-6, 9-4 Landmark Conference). CUA fought to get the win and improve to 9-15 on the season, 3-10 in conference with one game remaining for the young team.
The Cardinals had a strong first half as the defense managed to hold off an initial Moravian attack. The score in the first seesawed back and forth with six ties and seven lead changes as neither squad could gain a significant advantage. The Cards took the final lead of the half off of a layup by Nick Olivero (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) to make the score 27-26. From that point on CUA controlled the lead going into the locker room up 39-36.
Freshman D.J. Johnston (Ambler, Pa./Germantown Academy) led the Cards in the first with nine points while Wes Parker (Germantown, Md./Northwest) added eight and Olivero had six. R.J. Dixon (Charlotte, N.C./Cannon School) was the leading rebounder with six. The Cards shot over 50 percent from the field including a 2-4 performance from beyond the arc. They outrebounded the Greyhounds 20-15 while both squads committed nine turnovers. Chris Earley led Moravian with 10.
The Cards stayed on top to start the second increasing the lead to as much as nine points. The Greyhounds never allowed a run, however, threatening throughout and even taking the lead twice during the final stanza. The Cards were up by two with three minutes remaining when they began to take it inside and get position on the boards drawing a number of fouls. In the waning minutes CUA shot 10 free throws missing just one to hold onto the lead and get the 85-79 victory.
Jason Banzhaf (Livingston, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) led all scorers with 20 points for the game, this marks the 12th time this season he has been CUA's leading scorer and the sixth contest in a row. Olivero added 18 points and Parker had 15 to round out the double-digit scoring. Chris McGrew (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch) and Dixon each had seven rebounds for the Cards. CUA shot 54 percent from the floor and 58 percent for long range marking one of their better shooting performances of the season. They also outrebounded the Greyhounds 34-25.
The Cards will finish out their season with a contest at Goucher next Saturday.
