Banzhaf's Big Game Seals Cardinal Victory
CUA finishes the season with 76-68 victory
TOWSON, Md. - The Catholic University men's basketball squad (10-15, 4-10 Landmark Conference) finished its season on a high note with a 76-68 victory over conference-rival Goucher College (6-19, 4-10 Landmark) who had beaten them previously this past season. Freshman Jason Banzhaf (Livingston, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) led CUA with 32 points and 18 rebounds marking the finest performance of his CUA career.
The Cardinals controlled the first half shooting 45.9 percent from the field and 100 percent from the charity stripe. Since the Gophers managed to keep it close on the boards and forcing turnovers shooting proved to be the difference for CUA which went into the locker room leading 40-30.
Goucher outscored CUA in the second half 38-36 but couldn't make up the ten-point deficit as the Cardinal defense stayed strong. Once again the Cards outshot the Gophers 44.4 percent to 35.2 percent and with the hot-handed Banzhaf leading the way, CUA pulled out the 76-68 victory down the stretch.
Banzhaf's 32 points and 18 rebounds marked season highs for the squad. Junior Nick Olivero (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) was the second leading scorer with 13 points and freshman R.J. Dixon (Charlotte, N.C./Cannon School) added 10. The Cards managed one more rebound, 47-46, but had three more turnovers in the match-up.
The Cards fell short of the conference tournament but will lose no one from this year's squad which bodes well for 2008-09.
