Men's Basketball Falls to USMMA
KINGS, N.Y.- The Catholic University men's basketball watched their six-game winning streak snap Saturday, as the squad fell to USMMA 76-66. With the loss, the Cardinals drop to 11-3 overall, 2-1 in the Landmark Conference.
CUA's Sean Stolzenthaler (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) hit a three-pointer on the first possession of the game to start off the scoring for the Cards. The Mariners answered right back with a three-pointer by of their own, and the score bounced back and forth. Catholic University finally snatched the lead with an Evin Yarbrough (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) three-pointer. The squad increased their advantage to as much as 10 in the half, shooting an impressive 7-14 from behind the arch. The Mariners were able to battle back, however, and CUA hit the locker room with a 35-30 edge.
USMMA would take the lead back two minutes into the second half on a three-pointer. After a few more lead changes, the Mariners pulled ahead for the final time with 15:37 remaining on a three-pointer. USMMA would maintain its double digit lead until the 1:21 mark when Stolzenthaler knocked down a fast break jumper and cut the lead to eight. However, the Mariners would sink two free throws with 28 seconds left to give them the 76-66 victory.
Catholic was led by Jason Banzhaf's (Livingston, N.J./Seton Hall Prep)17 points and four rebounds. Matt Fazzini (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) posted 10 points and four rebounds, while Stolzenthaler added 8 points and three rebounds.
CUA returns to the hardwood for a set of home games Friday and Saturday against Moravian and Scranton. Game times are set for 7:30 p.m., and 4 p.m., respectively.
