Men's Basketball Remains Undefeated
WASHINGTON- Catholic University's men's basketball team continued its winning streak with an 80-68 victory over Washington & Lee on its home court Wednesday evening.
CUA set the tone early, jumping out to a 13-4 lead in the first seven minutes of play. The team held a comfortable advantage until Washington and Lee's Kirk Jones sparked an offensive attack for the Generals with a layup at the 10:32 mark. The visiting squad then went on an 11-4 run of their own, and managed to snatch a one point lead by halftime.
Coming out of the locker room, the combination of Evin Yarbrough (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) and Jason Banzhaf (Livingston, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) helped the Cardinals regain a 50-44 advantage with 14 minutes left to play. CUA was able to extinguish any hopes of a Washington & Lee comeback with solid freethrow shooting and smart defensive play throughout the second half. Sophomore R. J. Dixon (Charlotte, N.C./Cannon School) put the seal on the game with two freethrows with 22 seconds remaining, and the Cardinals earned their third victory of the season.
Leading the way for CUA was Banzhaf with a game-high 21 points. The forward also added four rebounds and a steal. Dixon had a solid game of his own, contributing 16 points, four assists, and three rebounds.
The Cardinals return to action against Stevenson at the DuFour Center on Saturday, November 22nd at 7 p.m.
