Tartans Top Cardinals 61-56
PITTSBURGH, Pa.- The Catholic University men's basketball team
was defeated 61-56 by Carnegie Mellon in the championship game of
the 18th Annual Radisson / Carnegie Mellon Tournament Sunday
The two evenly matched teams battled back and forth for the entire first half. There were a total of seven lead changes and three ties throughout the first 20 minutes of play, but the Tartans took a 32-28 lead going into the locker room.
Carnegie Mellon came out in the second half on a 6-0 run, with two straight fast break lay-ups, putting the Cardinals behind 38-28.
Refusing to back down, the Cardinals put together a 10-0 run of
their own to take a 52-50 lead with 7:04 left in
regulation. After the teams exchanged baskets, the Tartans hit
a pair of free throws to put the teams in a 54-54 deadlock. A made
free throw and three more hoops for the home team over the next 90
seconds secured the 61-56 victory.
Catholic was led by Jason Banzhaf (Livingston, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) and R.J. Dixon (Charlotte, N.C./Cannon School) with 18 and 11 points, respectively. Banzhaf tallied in 8 rebounds on the night, as both he and Dixon were named to the All-Tournament Team. Sophomore Spencer Reed (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) chipped in 8 points and 9 boards in the contest.
The squad returns to the hardwood for their first conference game at Goucher on December 6th. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m.
