Greyhounds Outlast Cardinals
BETHLEHEM, Pa.- Despite a 60-point effort in the second half, the CUA men's basketball team fell to the Greyhounds of Moravian College by a score of 93-82. With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 7-6 in the Landmark Conference, 16-8 overall.
Moravian's explosive offense propelled them to a 21-4 lead in the first eight minutes of the game. Struggling to contain their opponents on the defensive end, the Cards found themselves without any sort of offensive momentum of their own in the contest's opening minutes.
A lay-up by Spencer Reed (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) finally sparked a short run by the Cardinals, but the hot shooting of the Greyhounds (six three-pointers in the first half) left the Red and Black trailing 45-22 as they headed into the locker room.
After the break, Moravian was able to extend their lead to as much as 29. The Cardinals outscored their opponent by 22 in next 15 minutes, and a three-pointer by senior Nick Olivero (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) cut the deficit to 7 with 1:06 to play. The Greyhounds kept their composure, however, hitting four consecutive foul shots in the closing minutes to give them the 93-82 victory.
CUA was lead by sophomore Jason Banzhaf (Livingston, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) 24 points, 8 rebounds, and three assists. Sophomores Reed and R. J. Dixon (Charlotte, N.C./Cannon School) chipped in 15 and 12 points, respectively. Reed also tallied seven boards in the loss.
The Cardinals return to action for their final conference game of the season against Goucher on Saturday, February 21st. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
