Four Players In Double Figures Lift Men's Basketball to Conference Opening Win
December 6, 2008
TOWSON, Md.-- Led by Jason Banzhaf (Livingston, N.J./Seton Hall Prep), who finished with 27 points and 13 rebounds, the Cardinals opened the 2008 Landmark Conference schedule with an 80-74 overtime win over Goucher.
Sean Stolzenthaler (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy), handled the offensive controls for much of the night, marking nine assists and only two turnovers. In addition to Banzhaf, Evin Yarbrough (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock), Brian Baker (Colts Neck, N.J./Colts Neck), and R.J. Dixon (Charlotte, N.C./Cannon School) all scored in double figures, 11, 12, and 14, respectively.
Darrin Boswell II led the Goucher attack shooting 8-15 from the field and netting 22 points.
The teams exchanged the lead and tied several times in the first half before Banzhaf made a layup with 7:50 left on the clock. The team extended its lead to as many as six points but a late jumper by Ryan Comstock cut the lead to four at the break.
Throughout the second half the teams exchanged small leads but never extended a lead to more than five points. Goucher had a chance with 32 seconds left to seal the game after R.J. Dixon fouled Darrin Boswell II and sent him to the line for two. Boswell missed the first, but converted the second to tie the game at 69.
Banzhaf put up a jumper with one second left but missed and Goucher grabbed the board sending the game into overtime.
In the extra session it was all CUA. The Cardinals allowed only five points in the extra session while scoring 11. Three of those points came from free throws and only one shot from the field. Dixon and Stolzenthaler sealed the game in the final seconds going four for four from the free throw line and extending the CUA lead to six.
CUA will return to action on Friday, Dec. 19, as the Cardinals will travel to Oglethorpe to take on Pitt-Greensburg (Pa.). Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
