Men's Basketball Dominates in Tournament Opener

WASHINGTON-- Jason Banzhaf (Livingston, N.J./Seton Hall Prep), who finished with a team-high 19 points, led the way as CUA dominated St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn, N.Y.), 88-60.
Brian Baker (Colts Neck, N.J./Colts Neck) added 17 points for the Cardinals while R.J. Dixon (Charlotte, N.C./Cannon School) netted 11 points.
Leading for St. Joe's were Justin Gist and Ervin Maddox both with 12 points.
The Cardinals trailed for only 54 seconds during the entire game. Those were the first 54 seconds after the tip. St. Joe's was awarded two free throws on a team technical foul when the official book was not ready before play. Ervin Maddox converted both free throws before the opening tip-off.
CUA then tied the game with 19:06 left in the first half, and took the lead with 18:47 left. After taking that three-point lead the Cardinals never looked back. Extending its lead to as many as 11 in the first half, CUA took a nine-point advantage into the break.
In the second half, the Cardinals extended their lead further, widening the gap to 29 with 10:43 left.
Over the final ten minutes of the game St. Joe's never climbed closer than 23 points, 81-58 with 2:41 remaining in regulation.
Catholic held a 54-31 rebound advantage including 22 offensive rebounds. Catholic was +6 in the turnover battle; while St. Joseph's was -8.
