Men's Basketball Falls to Scranton in Landmark Semifinals in Overtime, 71-64
WASHINGTON-- Led by Nick Olivero (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson), who finished with 14 points and shooting 4-6 from three-point range, the Cardinals fell to Scranton for the second time this year, 71-64 in overtime.
All five starters for Scranton finished in double figures, led by Paul Biagioli who finished with 16 points.
CUA led by as many as nine in the first half, but saw that lead disappear over the final ten minutes of the first half. The Cardinals trailed by four at the break.
CUA again led by nine with 4:29 left, but strong rebounding and second chance shots, but Scranton back into the game, including a three-point shot by Luke Hawk with 41 seconds left.
Spencer Reed (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) put up a layup with second left to break the tie, but a timely block by Paul Hawk and a defensive rebound gave Scranton a last second chance. Paul Biagioli put up what could have been a game-winning shot but it fell harmlessly to the ground sending the game to an extra session.
CUA scored only seven points in the extra session, but it was the perfect free throw shooting in the final minute that sealed the game and a trip to the Landmark Championship game for Scranton.
CUA will now await both the NCAA and ECAC tournament committees' decisions to find out its postseason fate.
