Men's Basketball Dominates the Boards, Defeats Lancaster
WASHINGTON-- Jason Banzhaf scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds, as CUA dominated the boards with a 42-29 advantage, defeating Lancaster Bible College, 71-58, in the opening round of the 2010 CUA/Residence Inn Greenbelt Classic.
R.J. Dixon joined Banzhaf in double figures in scoring, but with 14 second chance points in the game, the Cardinals grabbed 15 offensive rebounds led by Darrell Carroll with four and Banzhaf who had three.
Kevin Keltner and Madison Warfel kept the Chargers in the game, each scoring 15 points shooting a combined four triples. Keltner also added six from the charity stripe.
After exchanging baskets over the first two minutes of play, CUA broke out to a 9-point advantage with 15:01 remaining in the first half. Over the next ten minutes, the Cards protected and slightly extended that lead to 14 with 2:57 remaining before the break. The Cardinals settled on a 10-point lead heading into the break.
The second half started slow, but CUA held on to its 10-point lead until just past the nine minute mark when Madison Warfel hit his first of three consecutive shots, including back-to-back triples. His effort cut the Cardinal lead from 11 to three and forced CUA's hand.
The Cards answered with a Cody Otto triple and solid shooting the rest of the way, extending the lead to as many as 16 down the stretch.
CUA held a 42-29 advantage on the boards, including a 15-7 tilt on the offensive glass. The Cards also hit 18 of 25 free throws.
CUA will return to action tomorrow in the championship game of the 2010 CUA / Residence Inn Greenbelt Classic against Regis (Mass.) College at 4 p.m.
