Men’s Basketball Takes Title at CUA/Residence Inn Greenbelt Classic 88-77 over Regis College
WASHINGTON-- Led by MVP of the 2010 CUA/Residence Inn Greenbelt Classic, RJ Dixon led all scorers with 21 points and four assists as CUA defeated Regis College 88-77.
Jason Banzhaf, Shawn Holmes and Darrell Carroll all joined Dixon in double figures.
The Cardinals dominated the offensive boards all night, led by Chris Kearney who pulled down three offensive and six total to lead the team.
Jimmy Irmiter and Ta’Keame Gomes led Regis to keep the game close, both scoring 19 points. Irmiter was a perfect 7 of 7 from the field with five three-pointers.
CUA broke out to an early lead in the first half and never looked back. The Cardinals played tight defense and a fast paced offense that extended their halftime lead to 52-32.
In the second half, the Pride came out playing strong defense, forcing Catholic to take unwanted shots, and a fast-paced offensive pulling the squad to within nine midway through the half.
Catholic responded with 3-pointers late in the game and solid free throw shooting to close out the contest. CUA held a 32-19 advantage on the boards and hit 17 of 20 free throws.
The 2010 CUA/Resdience Inn Greenbelt Classic All Tournament Team was announced after the game. The players awarded that honor were Kevin Keltner (Lancaster Bible), Adam Katz (FDU-Florham), Jesse Vega ( Regis College), Jason Banzhaf (Catholic University) and MVP R.J. Dixon ( Catholic University).
CUA will return to action on Jan. 8, at 7:30 p.m. as the Cardinals continue Landmark Conference action against Juniata.
