Men's Basketball Drops St. Vincent to Open Season, 70-58


YORK, Pa.--
Led by Chris Kearney with 15 points and four blocks, the CUA men's basketball team (1-0) defeated St. Vincent College (0-1) 70-58 on Sunday in the 2009-10 season opener.

Shawn Holmes, Jason Banzhaf, and Clay Penecale each scored in double figures while Banzhaf and Spencer Reed each grabbed eight boards to help the Cardinals in the win.

BJ McGill was the only St. Vincent player in double figures and he scored 25 and grabbed five assists in the loss.

The Cardinals fell behind early in the contest, but a 7-0 run midway through the first half, gave CUA a 13-7 lead with 12:07 left in the first half. St. Vincent cut the lead to three but another 8-0 run gave that Cardinals an 11 point lead that they would never surrender.

At the break CUA held a 10 point lead but early in the second half St. Vincent threatened cutting the lead to just one with 16:55 remaining in the game.

Back-to-back-to-back Shawn Holmes baskets gave CUA a comfortable seven point lead that it extended to as many as 20 over the final 14:38 of play.

In the contest CUA out rebounded St. Vincent by a 41-30 margin including nine offensive boards.  The Cardinals shot 22-47 from the field (46.8%) and went 19-23 from the charity stripe (82.6%) including Kearney's perfect 9-for-9.

The Cardinals will return to action Monday night as CUA will face off against tournament hosts York (Pa.).  Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
