Banzhaf Scores 19, but CUA Falls to Washington and Lee,
LEXINGTON, Va.-- Jason Banzhaf went 7-of-15 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line to drop 19 against the Generals (4-1) but CUA (3-3) fell on Monday evening, 64-52.
Matt Fazzini added nine points for the Cardinals while Spencer Reed grabbed seven rebounds.
Ben Goetsh dropped 20 for Washington and Lee grabbing eight boards, while J.D. Ey and Zac White added 13 and 16 points respectively.
The Generals led throughout the first half and by as many as 15 but CUA cut that lead down to eight at the break, 30-22.
The Cards opened the second half with an 8-1 run that gave them a 32-31 lead with 16:14 remaining. The Generals answered immediately with a three-point play by White after he was fouled by Chris Kearney on a layup.
CUA jumped back in front on a Fazzini triple, and extended the lead to three on an R.J. Dixon layup. The Cardinals led by as many as four but with 8:25 left White's jumper on a Doug Poetzsch pass put the hosts ahead by two and sparked an 11-0 run that put the Generals up by a score of 55-44.
The Cards cut the lead to five down the stretch but solid free throw shooting in the final three minutes sealed the game for Washington & Lee.
CUA shot 21-59 from the field in the game (35.6%) but 21 personal fouls sent the hosts to the line 23 times where the Generals converted 14 chances.
The Cardinals will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 5 at 7:30 p.m. as the Gophers of Goucher College will travel to the DuFour Center to open the 2009 Landmark Conference schedule.
