Men's Basketball Sinks Merchant Marine, 72-70
WASHINGTON-- R.J. Dixon led CUA (11-4, 3-1 LC) with 22 points, as the Cardinals dropped USMMA (11-3, 3-1 LC), 72-70 on Saturday evening in Landmark Conference action.
Joining Dixon in double figures was Spencer Reed who finished with 12 points, while Jason Banzhaf led the rebounders with 12 caroms, and Chris Kearney led in blocks with five.
Jon Sneed kept the Mariners close all game with a game high 30 points. He was joined in double figures by Ryan Samuel and Kevin Karr who both had 11.
Catholic jumped out to a quick 16-7 lead and never allowed the Mariners within two. The Cardinals led the entire first half and were up by as much as 13 points. Dixon had 12 points and 2 assists in the first half. CUA went into the locker room at the half up 38-33.
The Cardinals came out in the second half matching the Mariners shot for shot and kept the lead in double figures for most of the half. CUA hit critical free throws at the end including one by Dixon to fend off the Mariners and seal the 72-70 victory.
Jon Sneed had seven points in the closing minutes to bring Mariners within two but fell short with a missed three pointer by Kevin Kerr in the closing seconds to try to go ahead.
CUA dominated the boards out rebounding the Mariners 38-35 led by Banzhaf with 12 rebounds. The Mariners gained the majority of their rebounds on the offensive glass, but failed to connect on many second chance shots. The visitors only converted 15 points on 20 offensive boards. CUA shot 55.8% from the field led by Dixon who was 8 for 9 and 2-of-2 from beyond the arch.
The Cardinals will host Drew University at the DuFour Center with tip off at 4 p.m. tomorrow as CUA will look to continue its winning ways.
