Banzhaf Hits 1000th Point as CUA Defeats Goucher,
WASHINGTON-- Jason Banzhaf entered tonight's game needing 28 points to hit the 1,000-point mark in his career at CUA. With 3:11 remaining in the game, Banzhaf found himself at the free throw line with two shots coming and 26 points already in his back pocket.
Swish! The first shot went through without even nearing the rim. As the official tossed him the ball the entire gym grew silent. The shot was up, and the tension was incredible. As the ball passed through the net, the crowd went wild knowing that Banzhaf had not only hit the 1,000-point mark but also sealed the game for the Cardinals.
CUA (4-3, 1-0 LC) defeated Goucher (1-4, 0-1 LC) 77-60, with Banzhaf leading the way with a 28-point and 13 rebound game. Brian Baker and R.J. Dixon both joined Banzhaf in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Micah Perry led the way for the Gophers with 12 points and six boards in the loss.
The Cardinals never trailed in the game as Banzhaf opened with back-to-back layups to put the hosts up early, 4-0. CUA extended that lead to as many as 18 in the first half but a Donte Brandon triple with 29 seconds remaining cut the lead to 15 at the break.
CUA shot 7-of-9 from three-point range in the first half to take a 43-28 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, the Cardinals extended the lead to as many as 19, but a strong second and third effort for the Gophers cut the lead to just eight with 11:29 to go, 54-46, and again with 5:34 to go, 64-56.
In the final five minutes of play, the Gophers would score only four more points, while the Cardinals dropped 14, including the 999th and 1000th of Banzhaf's career.
CUA will return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. as the Cardinals will welcome DeSales to the DuFour Center.
