Fazzini Finishes With 22 as Men's Basketball Drops
STEVENSON, Md.-- Matt Fazzini led the CUA men's basketball team (6-3) with 22 points as the Cardinals dropped Stevenson (1-9), 91-70.
Joining Fazzini in double figures were R.J. Dixon, Jason Banzhaf and Shawn Holmes with 12, 18 and 13 points, respectively. Banzhaf led the way with eight boards, while Chris Kearney added five caroms along with four blocks. The 22 points were a career high for Fazzini.
Greg Collins led the way for the Mustangs with 24 points while Broderick Hill and Andy Shelly each added 14 and 10 points, respectively.
Collins got the hosts on the board first with a free throw 55 seconds into the game. Banzhaf answered with a triple only seconds later and the Cardinals never gave up the lead. The hosts reached within one on two occasions early in the first half, but each time the Cardinals answered with a bucket before the Mustangs could even muster another shot.
Stevenson made back-to-back buckets with just over five minutes remaining to knot the game at 25, but CUA answered immediately with a 10-2 run and finished the half with an eight-point advantage, 35-27.
In the second half, Stevenson cut the lead to five with 17:23 remaining but a strong offensive effort by CUA held off the attack. In the second half CUA shot 60.0% from the field.
Down the stretch the Mustangs cut the CUA lead to as little as 12 points, but a 13 of 14 performance from the charity stripe extended the Cardinal lead to 21 as time expired.
CUA will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2009 at 4 p.m. as the Cardinals will host Lancaster Bible in the opening round of the 2010 CUA/Residence Inn Greenbelt Classic at the DuFour Center.
