Jason Banzhaf Records a Double-Double but CUA Falls to
WASHINGTON-- Despite three players in double figures, CUA (16-7, 8-4 LC) fell to the University of Scranton (16-9, 10-3 LC) on Tuesday night, 63-56 in Landmark Conference action.
R.J. Dixon scored 15 points to lead the offensive attack for the hosts, and Chris Kearney added 10 of his own to reach double figures, but it was Jason Banzhaf who kept the Cardinals in the game, adding 10 rebounds, including four offensive boards, to his 14-point night.
Zach Ashworth missed 10 shots from the field and three from the foul line, but still managed to lead the Royals with 19 points. Eli Londo and Dan O'Connell joined Ashworth in double figures for the visitors.
The Cardinals opened the game with force, putting the Royals in an early hole, 12-1 just over five minutes into the contest, but steady offensive from the visitors chipped away at the lead. In the final 15 minutes of the first half, CUA managed only nine more points, while the Royals passed the Cards with 24 points and a four point lead heading to the locker room.
The second half was nearly all Scranton as the visitors broke out to a nine-point lead with 13:34 to go, and maintained the lead throughout the second half. CUA got no closer than six points with 44 seconds remaining but solid free throw shooting in the finals moments sealed the game for the Royals.
CUA will now face Moravian on Wednesday evening at the DuFour Center before traveling to Goucher to end the regular season. With a playoff spot already clinched, the Cards will look to head into the postseason with momentum. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
