CUA celebrates 100 years of basketball with memorable day
WASHINGTON – On Saturday, January 29, the CUA men’s
basketball program celebrated its 100-year anniversary, centered
around the Cardinals game vs. Juniata. At halftime of the
game, CUA honored many of its 1,000-point scorers, basketball Hall
of Famers and the only team national championship in school
history, the 2001 team, with an on-court ceremony.
Following the game, which CUA won 68-32, a group of more than 225
basketball alumni and supporters attended a reception inside the
Pryzbyla Center to look back on the people and events that make up
the 100 years of CUA Basketball.
Among the speakers were CUA President John H. Garvey, as well as
Associate Vice President and Director of Athletics Mike Allen,
current Head Basketball Coach Steve Howes, and a video message from
the coach of the national championship team, Mike Lonergan.
The night concluded with the viewing of a video celebrating the
100 years of CUA Basketball.
“We were thrilled with the turnout that we had for our 100
years of CUA basketball celebration this past weekend,” Allen
explained. “The DuFour Center gym was filled with some
of the all-time great basketball players in our history, including
most of the members of the 2001 National Championship team.
It was especially rewarding to see our alumni connect with
old friends and teammates and to hear first-hand about the rich
history of our basketball program.”
