Banzhaf displays All-American skills in CUA's 72-50 victory
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Jason Banzhaf has earned All-American honors the past two seasons and looks to earn similar accolades this year. The senior's full complement of skills was on clear display at Johnston Hall on Friday night.
Banzhaf scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds – both game highs - to lead Catholic University to its fourth straight victory, 72-50 over Moravian College. Andy Roell added 13 points, and Chris Kearney had eight points, seven boards and a career-high six blocks.
With the win, the Cardinals improve to 15-6 and 6-4 in the Landmark Conference. They travel to play at league leader University of Scranton on Saturday at 4 p.m.
D.J. Strayhorn led the Greyhounds (9-12, 3-7) with 15 points. Blake English had nine points, five rebounds and a career-best seven blocked shots. CUA held Moravian to just 6 of 27 (22.2 percent) from beyond the arc.
Banzhaf did most of his damage inside, scoring on an assortment of short jumpers and putbacks. He followed two of his own misses underneath and then did the same on a missed free throw to put the Cardinals firmly in control, 55-39 with 8:33 to play. After another short jumper on a feed from R.J. Dixon, Banzhaf nailed a jumper from the left elbow, dropped in a trey and scored another deuce in the paint.
Banzhaf finished 10 of 16 from the field, 2 of 3 from 3-point range and added three steals.
The Cards, trailing 12-9, embarked upon a 10-2 run to lead 19-14 midway through the first half. After an English slam dunk cut the Moravian deficit to 27-21, consecutive triples by Gabe Estrada and Banzhaf put the Cardinals back up by 12. They led 35-24 at intermission.
