Joe Cardino didn’t decide he wanted to be a basketball coach until his senior year of college. He will continue his coaching education this season under Steve Howes at Catholic University. His duties include assisting with day-to-day operations, video exchange and recruiting.
Cardino was a student assistant coach at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y., in 2011-12. Led by Coach Bob Montana, the Dutchmen finished 16-9 and qualified for the four-team Liberty Conference Tournament.
Cardino worked under Steve Schulman last season at Lehman College in Bronx, N.Y. He contributed to shooting drills, worked with the Lightning big men and was in charge of video exchange. His coaching helped guard Kelvin Gil attain second-team All-CUNYAC recognition.
This past summer, Cardino worked as the Eric Harrison Basketball Camp in New York City and the Mark Turgeon Basketball Camp at the University of Maryland.
Cardino earned bachelor of arts degrees in economics and classics at Union College in 2012. Four years prior, he graduated from St. Anthony’s High School in Huntington, N.Y. He was a Merit Scholar (3.95 GPA) and member of the National Honor Society. He was also in charge of retreats for the St. Anthony’s Leadership Team.
Joseph Cardino was born and raised on Long Island in Copiague, N.Y. He is the son of Joe and Denise Cardino. His father was a rugby captain at Union.
