Cardinals bounce back with historic win at Frostburg State
FROSTBURG, Md. – After suffering its first loss of 2012 on Tuesday, CUA bounced back in a big way on Saturday, downing Frostburg State 11-6 on the road. The Cardinals led 5-3 at halftime and then broke things open up with a 3-0 third quarter. The win is the 100th in program history and improves CUA to 2-1, while dropping the Bobcats to 1-1.
CUA struck first when Tyler Catalani found the back of the net 1:21 into the game. The lead was short-lived though, as Frostburg State tied things up on a Phil Hess goal less than two minutes later.
Chris Fuccillo put the Cardinals back on top with his score at the 9:05 mark, and after Tom Scotto won the ensuing face-off, he fed Brendan Englert for another CUA goal, and a 3-1 lead.
Early in the second quarter, Will Horne extended the Cardinals' lead to three when he scored at the 11:35 mark.
The score remained that way until Ryan Serio netted a man-up goal for the home team, to bring the Bobcats within two.
With 6:17 to play before halftime, Dan Dowd made it a one-goal affair when he scored off an assist by Serio.
Catalani put an end to Frostburg State's brief run though, scoring with 5:08 on the clock, and giving CUA an eventual 5-3 lead at intermission.
CUA only out-shot Frostburg State by one in the third quarter and actually lost three of the four face-offs, but the Cardinals dominated on the scoreboard, owning a 3-0 advantage in goals scored.
The first came from Marc Saxton at the 11:53 mark and opened up a 6-3 lead for the Cardinals.
Fuccillo netted his second score of the day off a feed from Catalani at the 8:52 mark to extend to a four-goal lead, and Catalani completed his hat trick with a goal at the 1:37 mark to send the Cardinals into the final quarter leading by five.
CUA went in front 9-3 less than two minutes into the fourth when Englert found the back of the net, but Greg Bourne answered for Frostburg State to cut it to a five-goal game.
Fuccillo had an answer of his own to again put the spread at six, and when Englert netted his third goal of the day with 7:29 to play in the game, CUA was comfortably in front, 11-4.
The Bobcats did what they could to make CUA uncomfortable down the stretch, pulling to within 11-5 on Hess' score at the 5:48 mark, but that was Frosburg State's final goal until only 15 seconds remaining when Chris Rios got on the board.
CUA finished with a 36-29 lead in shots, while Frostburg State won the ground ball battle by one, 44-43. Fuccillo and Horne led the way with five ground balls apiece for CUA, while Scotto picked up four.
Patrick Pfaff finished with eight saves in goal for the Cardinals, before Mark Destro came in and stopped one shot. Frostburg State's Tyler Haines sent back 10 shots for the home team.
CUA returns to action on Wednesday, February 29 when the Cardinals open their home schedule against Marymount. The opening face-off is set for 6 p.m.
