Cardinals fall to Goucher 13-6 in conference semifinals
TOWSON, Md. – CUA's 2012 season came to an end on Wednesday after the Cardinals fell to top-seeded Goucher 13-6 in the semifinals of the Landmark Conference Tournament. The Gophers jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one quarter and CUA was never able to get any closer than three the rest of the way.
Goucher scored the first goal of the game 1:31 in when Jackson Lane found the back of the net.
With 8:30 to play in the quarter, Kyle Boncaro scored to make it 2-0, and less than a minute later, Matt Lynch made it 3-0 off an assist by Zachary Fratella.
Fratella then closed the quarter scoring with a goal at the 5:38 mark to give the home team a four-goal advantage after one.
CUA's Marc Saxton got the Cardinals on the board 19 seconds into the second quarter, but a goal by Pat Peddicord with 12:30 to play before halftime upped the Gophers lead to four again.
Tyler Catalani's goal at the 8:56 mark made it a 5-2 game, but again Goucher answered, this time from Sam Woodruff.
The Cardinals cut the lead to three once again when Sean Cummins found the back of the net at the 4:58 mark, but Rory Averett closed out the half with a score in the final minute to send the teams into halftime with CUA trailing 7-3.
Boncaro netted the first goal of the third to put the margin at five, but Brendan Englert's goal at the 7:25 mark brought CUA within four.
Goucher closed the quarter with back-to-back goals by Lynch to take a 10-4 lead into the final 15 minutes.
A goal by Averett early in the fourth put CUA in a seven-goal hole, before Saxton scored the Cardinals' fifth goal of the day with 13:13 to play.
The Gophers added two more scores to open up an eight-goal advantage, before Saxton scored as time expired to set the final margin at seven.
CUA was out shot 48-35 in the game, but the Cardinals won 12 of 21 face-offs, led by Will Horne, who won all 12. Horne also picked up five ground balls, and Englert caused a pair of turnovers.
Mark Destro got the start in goal and responded with 20 saves, while Englert dished out three assists to go along with one goal.
Connor Mishaw sent back 13 shots for the Gophers, and Averett scooped up a game-high six ground balls.
Goucher now advances to Saturday's Landmark Conference championship game to face the winner of the Drew-Scranton semifinal.
CUA finishes its season with a 9-6 mark, including 3-3 in the Landmark Conference. This marked the third consecutive season that the Cardinals qualified for the conference tournament.
