Fast start leads CUA to 11-5 win over Griffins
GWYNEDD-MERCY, Pa. – CUA rode a 4-0 first quarter to an
11-5 win over Gwynedd-Mercy (0-2) on Saturday to improve to 4-1 on
the season. Chris Fuccillo scored three times and Brian Keith
and Marc Saxton added two scores to send the Cardinals to their
second straight win.
Walter Hicky got the scoring started for CUA at the 10:29 mark of the opening quarter, with Fuccillo, Saxton and Tom Scotto following with goals to give the Cards a 4-0 lead after one.
Fuccillo pushed the lead to five with his second goal 1:13 into the second quarter before William Beck got the Griffins on the board at the 8:33 mark.
A man-up goal by Fuccillo with 7:12 to play before the half made it a 6-1 game and Keith followed with the Cardinals seventh goal less than a minute later.
Gwynedd-Mercy rallied back to close the quarter with three straight scores, including one from Zachary Goodman to pull within 7-4 at the half.
Keith was the first to score in the third, when he found the back of the net off a Fuccillo assist at the 9:16 mark. Saxton then pushed the Cardinals lead to 9-4 with a score at the 3:02 mark.
CUA scored the first two goals of the final quarter, with one coming from Tyler Catalani and Jack Drexel recording the other to set the final tally at 11.
CUA owned a 45-28 advantage in shots and Patrick Pfaff sent back a career-high 26 shots in goal. Ryan McDonough, Keith and Sean Cummins led the team with three ground balls apiece, and Fuccillo caused a team-high two turnovers.
No Gwyendd-Mercy player scored more than one goal, while Jonathan Figliola won 14 of 20 face-offs and scooped up a pair of ground balls.
CUA will next head to Florida where on March 6 the Cardinals will face Clark University in Clearwater. Start time is set for 4 p.m.
