Cardinals pick up important conference win on Senior Day

WASHINGTON – CUA celebrated Senior Day on Saturday with a 14-11 win over Susquehanna inside Cardinal Stadium.  The Cardinals received four goals from Chris Fuccillo and outscored the Crusaders 4-2 in the fourth quarter to improve to 9-4 overall and 3-2 in the Landmark Conference.

CUA went in front 2-0 with goals by Ryan Doyle and Walter Hickey in the first seven minutes of the opening quarter.

The Crusaders countered with two straight scores to tie the score at two with 6:22 to play, but Marc Saxton answered for CUA with a goal at the 3:03 mark to give the lead back to the Cardinals.

Two straight goals by Susquehanna to begin the second gave the visitors a 4-3 advantage, but Fuccillo's first goal of the afternoon knotted things at four.

Luke Delavan found the back of the net at the 10:56 mark of the second quarter to give the lead back to the Crusaders, but Tom Scotto came right back and scored a goal of his own to tie the game for the fourth time.

Following a Susquehanna goal at the 9:11 mark, Fuccillo scored number-two a little over two minutes later to tie the score for a fifth time.

Dustin Breakley's score with 3:21 on the clock again gave the lead to the visitors, but CUA closed the quarter out with goals by Brian Keith and Justin Schaufler to send the Cardinals into halftime with an 8-7 lead.

Susquehanna netted the first two goals of the third quarter to surge in front 9-8, but Brendan Englert and Walter Hickey closed the quarter with back-to-back scores for CUA, which gave the Cardinals a one-goal lead heading into the fourth.

Fuccillo completed his hat trick early in the final quarter to give CUA a two-goal advantage, and after Drew Saine found the back of the net at the 11:48 mark, the Cardinals found themselves in front by three.

Susquehanna's Tim Pastore cut it to a two-goal CUA lead with a score at the 10:43 mark, but Sean Cummins and Fuccillo netted the next two to give CUA a comfortable 14-10 lead with a little over three minutes to play.

Breakley scored the final goal of the game in the last minute, but it was too-little, too-late by that point.

CUA finished with a commanding 48-31 advantage in shots, and a 46-31 lead in ground balls.  The Cardinals won 16 of the game's 29 face-offs and they were also 16 of 19 in clear attempts.

Patrick Pfaff went all 60 minutes in goal for the winners and sent back 11 shots, while Scotto won 11 face-offs and scooped up eight ground balls.

With his four goals on Saturday, Fuccillo now sits just one score from tying Conor Kelly for the CUA school record.  Kelly netted 146 goals from 2003 through 2006.

The Cardinals will close out their regular season next Saturday, April 28 when they travel to Pennsylvania to face the Scranton Royals.  The opening face-off is set for 2:30 p.m.
