WASHINGTON – The Cardinals won their second straight on Saturday afternoon, downing UMass-Boston 10-4 on Senior Day. CUA jumped out to a 5-1 lead at halftime, and pulled away by scoring three of the four goals in the 4th quarter.
Walter Hickey, Brendan Englert and Nathan Chan all had multiple goals , while seniors Patrick Pfaff and Mark Destro combined for seven saves in goal to help CUA get the win.
Englert put CUA in front 1-0 with a goal 45 seconds in, before Nick Weiss tied the score for the only two goals of the first 15 minutes.
The Cardinals controlled the 2nd quarter, outshooting the Beacons 15-3 and outscoring them 4-0. Brian Finnegan got CUA started with his score 1:45 into the quarter, and Hickey made it 3-1 when he scored off a feed from Cam Feldman.
Feldman then fed Kyle Moran for a goal to make it 4-1 and Chan closed the half out with his goal 33 seconds before intermission.
Feldman notched his third helper of the day when he fed Hickey 3:12 into the 3rd as CUA went in front by five, but the Beacons cut the lead to four with a goal at the 9-minute mark.
Sean Cummins answered for the Cards off of Feldman's fourth assist, before Ryan McGoff made it 7-3 as the teams headed for the 4th quarter.
Englert opened the final quarter with his second goal to put CUA in front 8-3, but the Beacons continued to hang around, receiving a goal from Dom Fichera with 11:33 remaining to make it a four-goal spread.
Chan took a pass from Englert and scored his second goal of the day with nine minutes to play, to put the Cards in front by five, and Hickey closed the scoring out with a goal 16 seconds later.
CUA finished with a commanding 53-17 advantage in shots and the Cardinals were 13 of 14 in clear attempts. The Beacons were forced into 24 turnovers by the CUA defense.
The Cardinals are back in action on Thursday when they travel to Washington and Jefferson for a Landmark Conference game. Start time is set for 6 p.m.
