Hickey Lifts Cardinals to Overtime Win Against Randolph-Macon

WASHINGTON - With 2:29 left to play in the second overtime, Walter Hickey took a feed from Billy Kirmsse and found the back of the net to lift the Cardinals to an 11-10 win over Randolph-Macon.

The Cardinals seemed poised to earn their second win of the season in regulation, as Kirmsse scored with 3:19 left in the fourth to put CUA up 10-6. However, back to back penalties from Coleman Walsh III and Kirmsse opened the door for the Yellow Jackets who scored four straight goals in a span of 2:10 to force overtime.

Today's game was part of Catholic's Faceoff For A Cause benefitting the Wounded Warrior Project. In the first game of the day, Army defeated Furman 12-2.

Catholic improves to 2-1, while Randolph-Macon falls to 0-2. The Cardinals jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with 8:27 to play behind goals from James Clarke and Chris Wellock. The Yellow Jackets closed out the first quarter with two scores of their own to even things out.

Kirmsse ignited the Catholic offense 23 seconds into the second quarter off of an assist from Tim Keith. Two minutes later, Hickey got past R-MC goalie Brian Davies for his first goal of the game. Bobby Kusbit capped off the 3-0 run with 9:00 left until half as CUA led 5-2. A Randolph-Macon goal cut the lead back to two before Clarke scored on a man-up opportunity to push the advantage to 6-3.

In the third quarter, the Cardinals outscored the Yellow Jackets 3-2, from goals by Cam Feldman, Sean Cummins, and Keith.

The fourth quarter was a battle as neither team could break through offensively until the 5:10 mark when Nick Benhoff cut the CUA lead to 9-6. Catholic answered back with a goal of their own as Kirmssee's second goal at 3:19 to play gave the Cardinals their biggest lead of the night at 10-6.

The Yellow Jackets were not finished, as they won the next four faceoffs and scored on each of their possessions to tie the contest at 10-10 with just 29 seconds left.

CUA won the next faceoff and but was unable to get a shot off, and the teams headed into overtime.

In the first extra period, Harrison Holak came up huge for the Cardinals, rejecting two Yellow Jacket shots in the sudden-victory scenario.

Kevin Murray won his ninth faceoff of the day to start the second overtime, and made his way past the restraining line where the Cardinals called a timeout. CUA worked the ball around looking for an opening and found Hickey on the left wing who ripped a shot from 20 yards out for the dramatic win.

Holak recorded 17 saves on the day, as he made his season debut for the Cardinals in between the pipes. His counterpart, Davies made 10 saves in the losing effort. Ground balls were close to even, as R-MC held a slight 35-to-33 advantage. The Yellow Jackets had a 44-35 advantage in shots, thanks to 13 shots in the fourth quarter, compared to CUA's three.

The Cardinals return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 26 when they travel to Hampden-Sydney for a 6:00 p.m. start time.
