WASHINGTON - John Gregitis scored with three seconds left to lift Scranton to a 5-4 victory over Catholic in Landmark action on Friday, March 14 in Scranton, Pa.
CUA jumped out to a 3-0 lead at halftime as Hickey, Kirmsse, and Cowan all scored. Sophomore goalie Harrison Holak had six saves in the first two quarters to keep the Royals scoreless.
Neither team could find the back of the net in the third quarter as Catholic kept its three goal lead heading into the final period.
The Royals (4-2) came alive in the fourth quarter, scoring four straight goals including two man-up opportunities to take a 4-3 lead by the 3:51 mark.
With under a minute to play, the Cardinals rallied to even things up at 4-4 as Hickey scored his second goal of the game with just :37 left in the contest.
Scranton won the ensuing faceoff, setting up the final posession of the game. The Royals worked the clock all the way down to the final seconds as Gregitis scored his only goal of the game with three ticks left on the clock.
Kevin Murray won the next faceoff but the Cardinals were unable to get a shot off before the final horn sounded.
For the game, the Cardinals had a 39-23 advantage in groundballs, led by Tim Keith's game-high six. As a team, CUA was successful on 20-21 clear attempts compared to the Royal's 15-18.
Holak finished the game with 13 saves as his counterpart had 10 saves.
The Cardinals return to action at home on Saturday, March 22 when they welcome Merchant Marine for another Landmark contest, slated to start at 1:00 p.m.
