2001 Season Preview

The team enters its fourth season at the varsity level after making great strides since its inaugural season. The squad, which scored more points and allowed fewer goals per game less than in each previous year, improved from 1-12 in 1998 to 6-7 this past season.

Head Coach Brooks Singer believes his team's returning players will provide the necessary foundation for success.

"I think we've improved at every position," Singer said.

"We are looking forward to this season and to our future development because of all the positive moves that we've made. From recruiting to skill level to competitiveness, we've upgraded the program in its entirety."

The team has over 30 players on its roster which include seventeen freshmen and only three seniors. Singer's goal is to establish a lacrosse program that has a promising future in both Division III and the conference. He looks forward to his team's continuing participation in the competitive CAC tournament at the conclusion of each regular season. The team looks to improve its record and establish itself in the conference this upcoming season.

Attack
Returning to lead the offense is sophomore Matt Lambert (Kellenberg, N.Y.), who led the team with 30 goals last season, fourth in the CAC in goals per game. Lambert will be joined by a strong freshman class including Jamie Lynch (LaSalle, Pa.), Andrew Donnelly (St. John Baptist, N.Y.), Adam Chumas (Tilton, N.H.), and Eric Slagle (Poolesville, Md.).

Midfield
Upperclassmen Jimmy Nalls (Gonzaga, D.C.), Sean LaVine (Chaminade, N.Y.) and Mike Fithian (LaSalle, Pa.) return to lead the Cardinals' midfield. Nalls tallied 24 points last season, with a .503 face-off winning percentage. LaVine and Fithian add leadership to the young midfield. Sophomores John Bracken (Cardinal O'Hara, Pa.), Kevin Coyle (St. Joseph's, Pa.), Dan Lavoie (Hargrave, Va.), and Ryan Welsh (Salesianum, Del.) will contribute vastly on the offensive end of the field. Newcomers Ryan Bradley (Xaverian, N.Y.), Mike Campbell (Broadneck, Md.), Justin Kelly (Boston College, Mass.), and Spencer Moysey (Loyola, Ill.) will be welcome additions to the midfield.

Defense
The junior trio of Matt Comerford (Randolph, N.J.), Paul Swartz (Cumberland Valley, Pa.) and Andrew Avon Central Catholic, Pa.) will lead the defense after a strong 2000 campaign. Avon is a fast and experienced long stick midfielder. Comerford uses aggressive checks and strength to power the defense. Swartz is both fast and strong. The unit will strengthen with the addition of Cardinal football players Tim McCarthy (Gonzaga, D.C.) and Geoff DeOliveira (St. John's, D.C.). McCarthy, an All-American on the gridiron, has excellent footwork for a 315-pounder. He, Benjamin and Colin Heaney (Christian Brothers, N.J.) will add size and skill to the defensive unit. Erik MacEwen (Chaminade, N.Y.) will return this season as a long stick midfielder after sitting out last season because of injury. Newcomers Ted Moralle (Fairhaven, N.J.), Graham Simm (St. Mary's, Md.), and Morgan Tremper (Calvert Hall, Md.) will be welcome additions to the defense.

Goaltenders
Sophomore goalie Rob Jablonski (St. John Neumann, Pa.), who transferred last season from Drexel, brings knowledge, experience and an aggressive style of play to the Cardinals. Jablonski ended the season ranked 17th in Division III with a .635 save percentage. Newcomers Matt Monfet (Seton Hall, N.J.) and Shane Mulrooney (St. Joseph's, N.J.) will add depth to the netminder position.
