WASHINGTON - Catholic was limited to two second-half goals as Mary Washington rallied for a 10-6 win over the Cardinals in a Capital Athletic Conference matchup Tuesday afternoon.
Locked at 1-1 after the first quarter, CUA rolled off three straight with goals from freshman Conor Kelly and two from junior Eric Slagle to make it a 4-1 Cardinal lead. But the Eagles tallied right before the half on a goal by Paul Schutzman with an assist from Mark Fiore, one of his eight helpers on the day.
The teams traded goals early in the third quarter before the Eagles scored six straight to open up a four-goal lead. Matt Wiles scored two of his game-high three scores during the stretch.
Freshman Terence Kempf scored with just over five minutes to play in the game but the Cardinals were unable to get anymore as Mary Washington held on for the victory.
Sophomore Andrew Couden posted 11 saves while MWC keeper Mike D'Eredita made six.
Catholic (3-5, 0-4 CAC) returns to action this weekend with a non-league game at N.Y. Maritime this Sunday at 5 p.m.
