Cards struggle to find the back of the net

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University men's lacrosse team (4-7, 2-5 Capital Athletic Conference) was defeated 11-2 by the Goucher Gophers (4-4, 3-2 CAC) Saturday afternoon at the DuFour Center.  The Cards outshot the Gophers 44-31 but misfired on a number of occasions.

Goucher was solid in the first half scoring the first two goals of the game before CUA could get on the board.  At 4:09 Bobby MacArthur (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks So) hit a shot off of a pass from Colin Whitaker (Doylestown, Pa./LaSalle) during a man up opportunity to make it 2-1.  Unfortunately that would be the last sign of brilliance in the first half for CUA as the Gophers took it to them in the second.  Goucher scored five goals during the second period in just a three minute span.  Despite the Cardinals' ability to hold them for the other 12 minutes the damage had been done and CUA went into the locker room down 7-1.

In the third quarter neither squad was able to do much offensively with the Gophers scoring just one goal.  The last of scoring may have been due to the roughness of the game which increased as the teams returned to the field.  In the third quarter there were six penalties totaling four minutes and thirty seconds interrupting the flow of the game.  Goucher came back in the fourth quarter however hitting three goals to make the score 11-1.  Julian Manolio (Maywood, N.J./Paramus Catholic) scored the Cards' final tally at 5:34 but it wouldn't be enough as CUA fell 11-2.

Despite the lopsided score the Cards had a number of opportunities outshooting Goucher 44-31.  The Cardinals were also more careful with the ball turning it over 23 times to Goucher's 29.  Junior goalkeeper Greg Kavazanjian (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) took the loss but did record 14 saves on the day.

The Cards will host Christopher Newport on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m., at the DuFour Center.
