CUA Defeated in Final CAC Game
Reinckens scores three on Senior Day
WASHINGTON - Phil Reinckens (Bethesda, Md./St. John's College) contributed three goals on Senior Day but his effort couldn't give Catholic University men's lacrosse the win over the St. Mary's Seahawks (9-4, 5-2 CAC) Thursday afternoon. The Cardinals fell 14-6 in their final game in the Capital Athletic Conference before tournament play. With the loss CUA falls to 5-9 for the season and 2-6 in the CAC.
The game started out slow after a thirty minute rain-delay stalled the opening face-off. Reinckens scored the first goal of the game at 13:05 on an unassisted shot. From that point on, however, it was all St. Mary's with the Seahawks staging a 7-0 run to close out the half. St. Mary's was led by two goals and an assist each from Cyrus Albertson and Ryan Alexander. At the break it was 7-1 in favor of the Seahawks.
The major discrepancy in the first half was the Cards' inability to get the ball on the face-off. CUA was just 1-10 in the first thirty minutes despite staying with the Seahawks in most of the other statistical categories.
St. Mary's scored one more to start the second half before CUA could stop the bleeding with a goal from Danny McNamara (Southlake, Tex./Southlake). Unfortunately this was followed by a string of six Seahawks scores including two off of the possession gained from the face-off.
Finally at 7:26, CUA managed to get hot on offense but it was too late. In the final seven minutes the Cards went on a 4-0 run that included two goals from Reinckens as well as a goal and assist credited to Bobby MacArthur (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks So). However, this wouldn't be enough and CUA fell 14-6.
For the game, St. Mary's held the advantage in shots (41-33) and saves (14-7) but the Cardinals held their own notching seven more groundballs and five fewer turnovers. A major stat of the second half proved again to be the face-off as the Cardinals finished the game just 5-24.
CUA will travel to play Mount Ida on Sunday before the start of CAC tournament play next week.
