Cardinals Sink Captains
MacArthur and McNamara combine for six goals
WASHINGTON- The Catholic University men's lacrosse squad got back on the winning track Tuesday evening with an 11-7 victory over the Christopher Newport Captains (3-5). The win snapped a three-game skid for the Cards who are now 5-7 on the season.
The first period proved to be the key to the game for CUA as the Cards broke out with four unanswered scores to start the game. Phil Reinckens hit one at 13:44 while Colin Whitaker added a man-up tally at 6:16. However the real spark was provided by Danny McNamara who scored back to back goals just 23 seconds apart to beat the horn making it 4-0 after one quarter.
CNU came back with a pair of goals in the second but once again CUA broke away when it got close with Bobby MacArthur and Julian Manolio notching one to make the score 6-2 at the half.
The Cards were outscored 3-2 in the third quarter. MacArthur managed two more but the Captains' Mike Burns was also on fire hitting a pair of his own. In the fourth CUA held the 3-2 advantage getting scores from Reinckens, McNamara and Tim Rettaliata to make the final 11-7.
CUA outshot CNU 41-38 but the Captains did get the groundball advantage 42-36. Both teams won 11 face-offs and the Cards had one turnover less than CNU. Greg Kavazanjian had the win in goal for the Cardinals with 17 saves on the day.
CUA will have one more game this week as they travel to Eastern on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
