Cardinals Trump Blazers 11-7
Brant has five points on the day
FREDRICKSBURG, Md.- The Catholic University men's lacrosse squad improved to 3-2 for the season Tuesday with an 11-7 victory over the Hood College Blazers (0-9). The Cardinals were led by junior Kyle Brant (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's) who had four goals and an assist in the contest.
Mike Groh (Walpole, Mass./Xaverian Bros) started the scoring for CUA with a goal at 8:21 and the assist credited to Brant. This was followed by a score of Brant's own to make it 2-0 before Hood could respond. An unassisted tally with just one second remaining put CUA up two going into the second quarter. The second period was a defensive battle as neither team could find the back of the cage despite a total of 16 shots making the score 3-1 at the break.
CUA got started early in the third when Mike Scotto hit the man up goal less than a minute in on an assist from Groh. The Cardinals had a big quarter with six unanswered goals including three from Brant and a pair from Jimmy Sinnott (Blue Bell, Pa./LaSalle) to give the Cards a comfortable 9-1 lead going into the fourth.
Baker Millo (Port Washington, N.Y./Port Washington) kept up the momentum for CUA with a score at 12:36 off of a pass from Tim Rettaliata (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore). Unfortunately, Hood had something left as they staged a 6-0 run of their own to get back into the contest. With the score at 10-7 in the Cards' favor, Mile managed his second goal of the afternoon at 2:41 to make the score and the eventual final 11-7.
Brant had a team-high five points in the contest followed by Groh who had three, one goal and an assist. Millo and Sinnot each had two scores in the contest. CUA outshot Hood 39-30 and had five more ground balls. Greg Kavazanjian (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) took the win in goal with six saves in 46 minutes played.
The Cards will travel to Farmingdale on Thursday for a match up at 3 p.m.
