Cards Allow Fourth Quarter Goals in 9-8
Brant scores three in the defeat
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Catholic University men's lacrosse squad lost a tough one by one goal Wednesday to the Christopher Newport Captains (5-4). The Cards led going into the fourth quarter but allowed two CNU goals for the 9-8 loss. The Cards are now 4-3 on the season.
The Cards came out fired up scoring three early goals midway through the first quarter. After the initial surge, the Cardinal offense cooled off but the defense allowed three CNU goals to tie it up early in the second quarter. John Volpe (Newton, Pa./Notre Dame) scored his second goal of the day at 13:47 to take a small lead but once again the Captains answered. The teams traded goals once more before the break to tie it up at the break.
Mike Groh (Walpole, Mass./Xaverian Bros) put the Cards ahead to begin the second half and after a CNU retort Kyle Brant (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's) notched his third of the day for CUA making the score 7-6. After a captain tally with eight minutes remaining, Mike Scotto (Belmar, N.J./St Rose) scored his second and CUA's final goal for the game giving the Cardinals an 8-7 lead going into the final quarter. Unfortunately, the Cards' sticks cooled off and despite five shots were unable to find the back of the cage while CNU added two more making the final 9-8.
Christopher Newport had two more shots and seven more groundballs but didn't dominate every stat as CUA led in face-offs 11-8 and saves. Brant led the CUA offense with three goals and Scotto added a pair of goals as well as two assists.
The Cardinals will play at Drew University on Saturday in a Landmark Conference game at 3:30 p.m.
