Saints Deal Cards 10-2 Defeat
Brant scores CUA's two goals
WASHINGTON - The Catholic University men's lacrosse team lost 10-2 Tuesday afternoon to former conference foe, the Marymount University Saints (6-5). The Cardinal defense held the Saints to just one goal in the first quarter, but couldn't keep up the momentum allowing seven scores in two quarters. With the loss the Cards drop to 4-5 on the season as they prepare for Susquehanna on Saturday.
The first quarter was quiet for both squads as Marymount managed just one goal. CUA outshot them 8-4 and controlled much of the offensive play. However, all of that changed in the second quarter when Marymount increased its accuracy scoring on three of just five shots taken. Looking at a four-goal deficit, Kyle Brant (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's) finally put the Cards on the board at 2:46 when he connected off of a pass from Mike Groh (Walpole, Mass./Xaverian Bros) to make it 4-1 at the break.
The third quarter had the Saints control the entire game as they outshot CUA 16-1 and scored four unanswered goals. Chris Wascak and Danny Carson combined for three of the four as the Cardinals fell into a deeper hole. Marymount added one more to start the fourth but this time CUA had an answer. At 5:56, Brant scored his second goal of the day from Matt Barbieri (Gaithersburg, Md./St. John's) to make it 9-2. Unfortunately that would be the last of the scoring for the Cards as the Saints added one more to make the final 10-2.
CUA was outshot 36-26 and had five fewer ground balls. Brant led the Cardinals with two goals while Wascak topped the Saints with three. In goal, Greg Kavazanjian (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) took the loss with 15 saves in the game.
The Cardinals will host Susquehanna on Saturday in a Landmark Conference game at Cardinal Stadium. The contest will be the second of a lacrosse doubleheader with the women's squad.
